CHA Winter Convention is near!

For some reason I think that y'all want to hear about the trade shows that we go to so I thought I would take a few minutes to tell you all about what we do at the CHA Conventions (Craft and Hobby Association).  I read on their website that CHA is "the craft and hobby world's fair" and that pretty much describes it!  Let's see if I can put it in perspective-if you've been to a Memories Expo you may know that they have about 75(ish) booths that are usually 10X10'.  Sometimes the booths are double-sized at an Expo.  Booths at CHA start at 10X20' and it is not uncommon for many vendors to double, triple, quadruple up on their booth space.  This year they have over 1,100 vendors in 325,00 square feet of space!  Most vendors "trick-out" their space by adding carpet, furniture, whole rooms...  One year I went to the Paper Adventure's booth and they had a whole office set up inside their booth with little rooms buyers could go in to sit at a desk with computers to order.  Massive!!  Last year the KI Memories booth had Elsie there doing make-n-takes in a faux-kitchen!  They had it set up with real cabinets and counters, a vintage Frigidaire, a center island with overhead lights, barstools and even the kitchen sink!  It was so cool!

Convention_center_night Inside the convention center they have two floors with vendors.  The bottom floor, which we all call "the basement" is just for NEW vendors and all the categories are mixed.  For example you will see scrapbooking mixed in with tole painting or floral.  Most of the action is upstairs.  There the vendors are put into sections so that if you are a scrapbook buyer you can concentrate your time all in that area.  In case you think that area is small...if, let's say we have an appointment with one of our vendor reps at 1pm and it is on the other side of the scrapbooking area, it will take us about 15 minutes to get there!  Of course that takes into account walking down the aisle the wrong way at least once!!

The show lasts 3 1/2 days and that is not enough time to take in just the scrapbooking booths!  I mean it!  We miss something every year!  The show floor is open from 9-5:30 and with about 15 minutes to grab a truly yucky lunch, we are walking and shopping the whole time.  OK...we do take a potty or Starbucks break if we need one!

There are classes going on the whole time.  We can take creative or business classes.  We usually take a business class or two.  Never know where the next great idea will come from!  There are morning meetings that happen before the show floor opens and there are "parties" after it closes usually for "preferred" buyers.  At these parties we schmooze with designers, company owners, etc.  We get to have some hands-on time with the latest products, there are usually treats to eat and freebies to bring home for give-aways but most importantally, we get to order product!

Most nights we go back to the hotel room stocked with catalogs and goodies and go through and to make sure we ordered what we wanted or to write up orders!  With a time zone difference, we try to go to bed early, but it is never on "our" time schedule!  It is great fun to put on our PJs, tune into some sappy romance movie, grab a late-night snack and a pile of catalogs to snuggle into bed to drool over!

This year Kristen and I are getting to go and Kristen tells me that she is not gonna be star-struck, but the jury is out on this!  Every year we stroll the aisles and we see all the "scrap-lebrities" like Becky Higgins, Donna Downy, Heidi Swapp and Sandy Genovise (spelling?).  Sometimes we see other popular crafters like Christopher Lowell, Vanna White or Martha Stewart!  You should see how ga-ga some people get for these folks!  I have been know to stand in line for a photo-op, so I am really not one to talk!  Becky_higgins_leisa_lisa_bearnson_3 One year I saw a BIG frenzy in the floral area over this uber-cute, teenage Asian girl.  Lots of people were gathered around her, posing for photos and getting autographs.  I had no clue who she was, but I am sure the floral folks had no idea who Tim Holtz was either!  It is very cool (I don't care what Kristen says!) to rub elbows with some of the scrapbook world's gurus!

There is tons and tons of product to see.  Fantastic new stuff that we want to get for the store.  Sometimes it is a total overload so we take lots of photos of new product, what fun we are having and what sites we are seeing so that we can bring them back with us and share it all!  It helps if we bring a "shopping list" with us so that we know some of the things y'all have been looking for too!

Kristen and I leave on Feb.8th so wish Bon Voyage and Bon Faire du Shopping!

Shiver me timbers...it's Treasure Hint time again!

Treasure_hunt_bling It's back...the 2nd Annual Tampa Bay Scrapbook Treasure Hunt!  We had such a jolly good time last year that we have set our sights on new treasure!

The dates this year will be Friday, March 7th through Sunday, March 16th.  That's an extra day to finish!

We had our first planning meeting last night and all the participating stores were there to work out our details and stuff like that.  I've got to tell you that we have kept the fun stuff like make-n-takes at each store (this year you will have a themed and matching album at the end), the fun tags to add to your bead necklaces, the cool tote bag and 10% discount.  We have improved on some things like having uniform store hours so we don't confuse you treasure hunters too bad and (drum roll please...) we have added more money to the prize booty!  There will be more prizes (awarded to hunters from EACH store) and one treasure hunter who completes her passport will get over $1,000 to spend at all the stores!  That alone should have you ALL filling the gas tanks and hoisting your sails!

Treasure_hunt You can purchase  your bag at any of the participating stores, but...  And this is a big "BUT".  Last year we sold out of the totes/passports and we ended up with some sad customers who wanted to hunt but couldn't.  This year we are starting early by taking pre-orders for the bags.  If you want one, you need to call the store ASAP.  Since we are not sure if the cost will be $5 or $6 all you have to do now is put your name and number on our list and we will call you when they come in.  Call or email with your information:  Name, phone and how many totes you want!

Call at: (727) 827-4911 or email to: whimsodoodle@aol.com

Visit the website (this years information comming soon) at:  www.tampabayscrapbooktreasurehunt.com

Call your best scalawag friends, work out carpool arrangements, clear some room on your credit cards but whatever you do...sign up to play at the TAMPABAY SCRAPBOOK TREASURE HUNT!

Garage Sale Announcement!

Have you been cleaning out your scrapping closets and organizers making room for all the new stuff you've been collecting?  Well, then you are ready for the Whim So Doodle Garage Sale!  That's right!  It is that time again!

The Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, March 1st.  If you plan on shopping only for some great bargains-times for shopping will be from 9:30am-2:30pm.  If you plan on being a "vendor" and selling your gently used scrapbooking or rubber stamping products-times for set up and break down will be 8:30am-3pm.  Vendor slots are held with a paid reservation and are assigned by Doodle Divas.  We cannot guarantee to reserve a special or favorite location.

We will have two "locations" this year-outside AND inside!  Inside is $10 per 6-foot table and that includes our table and outside $5 your 6' table/space.  You may rent more than on space/table-just double the amount!  Inside space is using our tables,  not yours.  Outside space is using your tables, we will not be providing tables outside.  Inside space will be in our classroom, so space is much more limited than outside, so if you want an inside spot-CALL EARLY!!

We will have refreshments available to purchase on the day!

Registration for the Garage Sale begins on Monday, January 21st.  Let me repeat that!  Registration begins on Monday, January 21st!!

Pet Photos in the Park

Hello all you pet lovers out there!  Have we got a great event for you!

On Sunday, February 10th you will bring your pet to Sawgrass Lake Park and Leisa will be there to do pet photography sessions with you and your furry sweethearts!  Leisa and Brad will be doing 1/2 hour sessions and you need to call the store to reserve your slot!  Sessions begin at 9am and the last session is at 3pm.  We are doing this for one day only!  Needless to say, space is limited!

Your photos will be ready in one week and when you come in to pick your photos up, you will also receive a mini "Sweetheart Pet" album kit that you can make here at the store!  This is not a class, but you will need about 1 hour to complete the project, so make sure you have the time to sit and create when you pick your photos up!  This cute album will be the perfect way to showcase the beautiful photos Leisa will take.

Cost for the session, 1 printed photo, 1 CD with all the photos from the session and the mini-album kit is $50.

Remember this is a public park, not an pet park so it is not enclosed.  Make sure you bring your pets on leashes so they don't run away!!

Directions and specific meet-up spot will be on-line soon!

Registrations begins NOW for Pet Photos, so call the store ASAP to reserve your spot.  (727) 827-4911.

What is happening this week (and month)!

We have a chock-a-block full week ahead of us!  In fact, I think that the entire month is full of fantastic stuff to do at The Doodle!

Tomorrow (Monday the 7th) is our One Hit Wonder class.  January's theme is party and you can choose between a generic party or New Years Eve.  It is a great page (if I can say so myself!).  The time on Monday is from 12-1 pm and we are serving Italian Meatball Subs for lunch!  Starting in January we are offering our One Hit Wonder both in the afternoon-for our "Lunch Bunch" and then also in the evening for those of you who are not lucky enough to work right around the corner from the store!  The time for the evening OHW is from 6:30-7:30 and we are serving appetizers instead of lunch.  Cost for either is only $10!!

Tuesday will be the first day of our Creative Cafe Happy Hour.  We are so excited to launch this since the product is so cute and flying off the shelves without us having to do a thing!  This week we are doing a pretty tag/envelope set done in my favorite color palette-Lucky.  Each week there will be new sample to make-n-take with you and the cost will be different (but nominal) for each depending on the product that was used.  As of today,  you do NOT need to register for the Happy Hour, just bring your creative little 'ole self in!  If you cannot make it on Tuesday, then the sample will be available from Wednesday to Saturday for you to come in and "belly-up" to the Art Bar and have some fun!

Also on Tuesday, Shirley will be starting her Birthday Club.  This is such a fun idea and we cannot wait for y'all to enjoy it!  Each month Shirley will make a cute greeting card using something fun from the store...a new tool, new product or a new technique!  You can come in and make the card for FREE any month(s) you want to come to.  But, if you are attending in your birthday month, you will also get a birthday gift and a special discount that evening!  That means you do not have to wait until it is your birthday month to come!  We want you to come and celebrate everyone's birthday!  I heard mention of birthday cake, but I am not sure what fun surprises Shirley has in store for you!  You DO need to register for this club by giving us your name, phone and birthday month-but registration in this club is FREE!!  You just have to remember to RSVP each month you are attending!  Oh!  I forgot to say that the date for each Birthday Club will be the SECOND TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH!

Tons of great classes are happening this month, so make sure to click on the calendar to see photos, descriptions and more!

We are excited about 2008!

Hope to see you soon!

Happy New Year!

Hello and a big 'ole Happy New Year to 'ya!  I hope that everyone had a great holiday season full of family, fun and fellowship!  After last night I have to tell you that I have a new addiction...the XBox version of Scene It!  I am hooked!!  But the bad thing is I don't own either the game or an XBox.  Sniff, sniff...guess I'll be spending a lot of time with my nephew!

On Monday before we left early to start our celebrating (or in my case "celebrating" would start off with fixing a flat tire in the parking garage!  Yuck!) I took some photos to share with you of new product and stuff around the store.  Hope you enjoy and come in to see it live very soon!

Img_0210This is a photo of the new Creative Cafe!  It is located in the classroom and it is full of fun new products and lots of inspiration.  You just "belly up" to the Art Bar and there are tons of idea sheets that you can follow to create a card or special project.  Each week we will be debuting a new project that you can create on Tuesday night between 5-8 pm.  Check out the Cafe next time you are in the store.

Img_0227

Kristen did a demo last Saturday using the Silhouette machine from QuicKutz.  She showed people how to hook up their computers to the machine and lots of tricks to create pretty die cuts, words and more!  I think she got a few people hooked since we had some people in on Monday picking up one of the new "bundles" from QuicKutz.  The bundles work in the machine and have tons of themed shapes and an exclusive alphabet that you can only get in the set.  Kristen did a fantastic demo of a Christmas page that I had to share.  Img_0228

Img_0229 See the reindeer?  Isn't he just the cutest?  Who would have thought to make a green reindeer?   I sure wouldn't have but I just love him and now I have to see if Kristen will show me how to cut one, 'cause that is what I'll be doing at the Saturday crop on the 19th!!

Img_0230 Get this, Kristen flipped over her layout and showed me that you can use your negative shapes from the cut-outs and you have an instant template to color in with inks, chalks or pencils.  Way cool!

Img_0225 Img_0226 Two hot new products right now is anything felt and these cute new stitching templates.  Queen & Co. put out these great holiday felt borders and shapes that are going fast.  They are right by the register so make sure to check them out next time you are in.  Also these little templates that make stitching a breeze are flying out the door!  When y'all buy one, you seem to be either going back to get more or coming back in a few days to get more.  We used them in a tag during the Holiday Open House and people fell in love with the easy way to use them.  Come on by and we would love to show you how they work!

There is still more stuff arriving almost every day.  Make sure to come on by and see what we have to keep you working on your 2008 resolution on getting more scrapbooing done!

See 'ya!
