Factoid Friday

My good friend, Ginni, loves bits of trivia and I thought about her when I decided to make "Factoid Friday" post a regular blog thing!  So make sure to check the Doodle's blog every Friday to learn something new!  You can also set up your computer to send you a "ping" alert every time there is a post from our blog-check out Google alerts if you are interested!

Since we just came off of an election, how about a Presidential "factoid"?

President Benjamin Harrison, our 23rd President, was afraid of electricity. 

 

About the time that the White House was being wired for electricity, the electric chair was becoming a common form of execution so he knew that electricity could kill a person.  During President Harrison's "stay" at the White House he and his wife wanted nothing to do with turning the lights on or off, so they had the servants do it for them.  Either that or they would either leave the lights on or off all night long.

Pumpkin Bisque Recipe

I had a VERY strong request from yesterdays One Hit Wonder class to share the recipe from the soup I made.  First I have to say that I am not a big recipe follower so I just add stuff 'till it tastes "right".  With that said, this recipe won't have exact quantities on all ingredients.  It was super-yummy and I hope you enjoy!

(The pot I made fed about 14 people)

3 cans of pumpkin puree

2 boxes of vegetarian broth

Extra vegetarian bullion from a jar

Bag or two of frozen diced onions (you can dice your own if you prefer)

Brown sugar (3 tablespoons?)

Curry powder (2 tablespoons?)

Spicy Spaghetti Seasoning mix (6-7 shakes)

Kosher salt (to your taste)

Black pepper (more than I thought!)

Nutmeg (1 teaspoon?)

Tiny dash of hot sauce

Whipping cream (about 1/2 of the medium size carton)

Olive oil

Put a bit of olive oil in a large pot and add onions.  Cook until tender.  Add pumpkin and broth.  Add all the seasonings until you like the taste.  Add the whipping cream until you like the color.  Heat thoroughly.  You shouldn't need to add any thickener, but if yours looks a bit too runny, feel free to sprinkle in some Wondra.

This soup was especially yummy with the Parker House rolls (Publix brand) that we ate with it!

Today is gonna be "Gimme-A-Treat" Tuesday and since Kate (plus 4) replied to the "Guess where were went" blog post she is gonna be our winner!

Creative Cafe tonight!

 
I honestly don't know how Kristen keeps creating such cute Happy Hour projects, all I know is that we all love 'em!  (I really love that y'all saved me a Halloween kit from last week!)  Tonight you will be making a cool cone shaped fall treat/sentiment holder.  For $4 tonight you'll cover a cute BE cone with  fall colored embellishments to create a hanging box that you can use for an individual holiday treat box or have the family add their fall sentiments or quotes to share on Thanksgiving day.

Creative Cafe Happy Hour is from 5-6pm and you can just drop on by and be creative before you head home for those election results!

In fact, make sure to take your cameras to your polling stations!  My polling station was very excited that I was making a scrapbook layout about my voting experience!

Class Update

I want to get the word about a new class we have started offering called "Off the Page". This class is a 1 hour "mini class" to boost your creativity. "Off the Page" means that we are taking our scrapbooking supplies off the scrapbook page and onto home decor, small gifts and crafts. This month we have "Off the Page" Joys of the Season which is a 4" circle box that we cover in class with paper & ribbon of your choice and Quickutz lettering. Then we fill it with things we are joyful for during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season written on scallop circles. You can make it for yourself as a reminder of things you are joyful for or make it for a friend and they can fill the box themselves.

Also coming up is a Holiday Planner Class. This small 5x7 board book is perfect to keep on your purse as you start making your holiday plans and buying all those gifts! There is a calendar to keep important dates on, a gift list so you can keep track of what you bought or gift ideas, a "To Do" list and "Don't Forget" list. You can add photos or extra pages to customize it to you and your family.
